             This starhollow night—

which needled cats make

             their home—finds self-portraits

puddled in Great Bulk and you

             on the porch sit & chaw

sit & chaw hick-stick

             muck-stuck tobacco

Your tongue    swiveled and thick

             only your tongue     Not

tobacco      You’d never chew

             tobacco     What a relief

you say     Whose porch is this?

             and the foxes whistle (

can foxes whistle?) And the foxes

             whistle louder still!
